My Story

Merry Christmas!

Throughout my life I have been up. I have been down. I have laughed. I have cried. I have been poor. I have been rich. I have been well. I have been sick. I have served God. And yes, I have served myself. But through it all I have learned I can depend on God. He is always faithful and always forgiving. And His Word is trustworthy and true. God is as good as His Word.

The following is the best story of my life. It is when I began learning  great truths about God. It is how I came to know the ultimate truth of God, His Son Jesus Christ.

When I was growing up every day had its job. Monday was wash day, Tuesday was ironing day, Wednesday or Thursday was shopping day, Friday was cleaning day, Saturday was baking day, and Sunday was church day.

Sundays were the highlight of our week. You could count on it. If it was Sunday we were in church. Even after I got married and worked full-time, Sunday was still church day.

Along with going to church I did a lot of church-things. I was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and a small group member. I also read my Bible and learned how to share the faith.

One evening when I was a young mother I was reading my Bible. It dawned on me that in spite of all the church-things I had done I was failing God. I may sound OK to you. I may looked OK to others. But it’s what God thinks that really matters. The Bible told me: “[You are] infected and impure with sin, when [you] display [your] righteous deeds; they are nothing but filthy rags.”

I personalized this verse because for the first time I thought about sin in a personal way. I had done many good things but the bad things, such as impatience, anger, and self-centeredness, polluted the good I was doing. I fell asleep that night with tears in my eyes.

What I remember about the next morning are impressions. God and I had a conversation, so to speak, that changed my life forever. I remember thinking about Jesus washing his disciples’ feet and how Peter resisted, “Lord, not only my feet but my hands and my head also!” I thought the same as Peter. Wash all of me. I was that dirty. Yet at the same time I was deeply loved by God and brand new inside. I had been born again.

It was later on that I realized that I had been a church member for 15 years! What would my friends think? When I told my husband, he tried to talk me out of it. After all, he had become a Christian because of me! But truly I was different. Something had happened to me. My heart was full of joy.

One of my favorite songs is “Blessed Assurance” because it tells what happened to this church lady.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the daylong;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the daylong.

The question I will leave with you is this. What is your story?

P. S. This is not the end of my story. It was just the beginning. Many of the stories on this blog are about what has happened since. Click on the category “My Story” to read more.

I love Jesus! He is my eternal hope, fullness of joy, calm in the storm and so much more. I enjoy reading, cooking, blogging and bird watching. I have two wonderful kids and a loving husband. God is good.

  1. Could you write something for widows, those grieving the loss of a husband. God is my everything now but i love to read what others have to tell me.

    1. I’m taken back a bit by your request. I have lost many things but not a spouse. However, all loss has similarities. So while I am considering your request some of my stories may be helpful.
To find these stories look on the right side of the blog under “Categories.” click “My Story.” You may find the following stories useful: 1) When a Parent Dies 2) Jesus Is 3) MTW said No 4) Those Scary Roads 5) He See you When You’re Sleeping.
Meanwhile, do you mind telling me what your greatest challenges are as a widow? May God Bless You!

  2. I just wrote you but didn’t tell you to check with Mary Jo Dawson about me. She knows me and my situation and will vouch for me. Betty Constuble.

  3. Happy Christmas sweet Lena Rae! I’ve been “dormant” for so long, it so nice to swing by and see a snippet of your story. I’m so thankful you listened to Holy Spirit’s beckoning those many years ago. It has made room for Romans 12:1-2 to manifest and take root. I hear Him now even saying, “The fruit Lena Rae, has remained.” Blessings to you and your family always.

    1. Thank you. Thank the Lord! I repeat this story yearly for it is the best story of all. Plus there are new followers who haven’t heard it. It”s the reason I became blogging again 3 years ago. Rick Warren said in his book “Purpose Driven Life” if you are a Christian you have a story and it needs to be shared. He is right! 🙂

  4. My story is filled with past mess that now I see brings about God’s message, for years I was ashamed but now I see God’s purpose with my story…Sometimes I’ll share my story and fellow Christians will say “I wish I had a cool testimony…” it actually drives me a little bit crazy because in my opinion if you’re a Christian you have a testimony and should be sharing God’s message of hope with others, no matter the details of your story even if it seems boring..he uses our story to point to His story honestly.
Thanks for sharing this post, it’s motivating!!!

    1. So true! If we’re a Christian we are saved from sin — some obvious, some not obvious, some seemingly small, some seemingly big, some common, some not so common. Sin is the human, universal problem that Jesus came to earth as a babe to eradicate. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

  5. Halleluia! Blessed Assurance indeed. This is your story, this is my story, this is my song. Today my song is – “Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness, opened my eyes, let me see – beauty that made this heart adore you, hope of a life spent with you. So here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that you’re my God….” Love and blessings, Lena. xx
