Free Range Chickens | Opinion

DOES THIS WORLD seem upside down? It does to me. The longer I live the crazier it gets. What I find mind-boggling is the insistence of people and animal rights groups. There are rights for everything from chickens to protected-people.

Chickens it seems have feelings. They are not to be caged. To be most happy they must roam free. For about the last 20 years chicken rights have been protected. Thus human beings are paying as much as $4.92¹ for a dozen Happy Eggs.

It is true! The $4.92 Wal-Mart Happy Eggs price is ridiculous. So I checked Kroger and found their Range-free Eggs are more reasonably priced at $2.99. And while less than Happy Eggs, this is still 67% (or 2/3s) more than the cost of normal eggs at $1.79.²

Thinking through this issue I asked a member of Generation X if he thought chickens warranted humane treatment. He certainly did. I asked if he realized the word “humane” in its early form described the treatment of human beings not animals.

A friend added her thoughts to the discussion:

“Chickens have almost no brain, just enough of one to breathe and be called living organisms! They don’t care where they live! This animal rights thing has gone way too far, talk about unnatural affections …

Animals with more neurodevelopment do suffer pain, do feel loyalty, and do have levels of intelligence. And they were made to enrich OUR lives, not us to enrich theirs! We were directed by God to take good care of them.”

What I find incredible is that animals have more rights than the unborn and many Christians.

The unborn are killed in their mother’s womb.

Christians are beaten, imprisoned, raped and thrown out of their homes, jobs and towns. In many countries, Christians have no rights. When they “violate” someone else’s rights, US Christian’s rights are coming into question.

We are living in the time when increasingly right is wrong and wrong is right.

“Woe to those who call evil good,
and good evil;
Who put darkness for light,
and light for darkness;
Who put bitter for sweet,
And sweet for bitter!”
Isaiah 5:20 NKJV

The insistence of rights at the expense of others is serious. I don’t know the answer. Perhaps you do? Please share your thoughts.

Meanwhile, I will buy normally priced eggs for as long as I can!

I love Jesus! He is my eternal hope, fullness of joy, calm in the storm and so much more. I enjoy reading, cooking, blogging and bird watching. I have two wonderful kids and a loving husband. God is good.

  1. Well said, Lena. I’m certain our Creator who made us in His likeness and image is saddened by the disregard and inhumane (murderous) treatment of the unborn and increasing persecution of Christians. God have mercy upon us.

    1. Thank the Lord. He put the topic on my heart. “The Lord is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night…” and then His mercy will end. All who not have not known Jesus the Savior we be judged accordingly. That will indeed be “a great and terrible day.”

      1. Between when I wrote this and you answered I wondered if I blew you away? I am sorry if I did. I haven’t been feeling well. 😦
