Who is on the Lord’s Side?

When are you going to make Jesus’ last command your first priority? This question came from a former pastor.¹ After 30 years I still find it challenging. The following is the last command Jesus gave to the disciples:

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples all all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Jesus the Christ; Matthew 28:18-20

We Christians, including myself, get easily side-tracked. We need to be reminded what Jesus called us to: disciple-making. The enemy of our souls wants to keep us busy doing good things, not the best thing. The following song helps me remember what God’s best is. The language is old. The message is timeless.

Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Not for weight of glory, nor for crown and palm,
Enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm;
But for love that claimeth lives for whom He died:
He whom Jesus saveth marches on His side.
By Thy love constraining, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Jesus, Thou hast bought us, not with gold or gem,
But with Thine own lifeblood, for Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling each who comes to Thee,
Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free.
By Thy grand redemption, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Fierce may be the conflict, strong may be the foe,
But the King’s own army none can overthrow;
‘Round His standard ranging, vict’ry is secure,
For His truth unchanging makes the triumph sure.
Joyfully enlisting, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Chosen to be soldiers, in an alien land,
Chosen, called, and faithful, for our Captain’s band;
In the service royal, let us not grow cold,
Let us be right loyal, noble, true and bold.
Master, wilt Thou keep us, by Thy grace divine,
Always on the Lord’s side—Savior, always Thine!

I love Jesus! He is my eternal hope, fullness of joy, calm in the storm and so much more. I enjoy reading, cooking, blogging and bird watching. I have two wonderful kids and a loving husband. God is good.

  1. It seems that He was talking to the eleven disciples at that time. My question is, how does this apply to us, especially being women? Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. What a great question! Yes, Jesus was speaking to His original 11 disciples. Afterward the eleven joined other followers, a group of both men and women. Please read Acts 1:12-15. It tells about the women and others about 120 people who were also Jesus’ followers or disciples.
      What began then continues today. As followers of Christ we are also His disciples. His words are as true for us as they were for them. I hope this helps. If not ask more questions. ❤
